AUTOMOBILES – Going the Distance for Sustainability?
When you buy a car, most emissions already exist. Steel. Aluminium. Plastics. Manufacturing energy. This means sustainability depends less on fuel stickers and more on how long the car protects lives and stays on the road.
Three ideas matter.
First. Safety as social sustainability.
A five star crash rating reduces death and injury risk over thousands of trips. A car that protects occupants preserves human capital. This directly reduces social loss. That is why vehicles from Tata Motors, Mahindra, Skoda, and Volkswagen rank high. Safety ratings act as a proxy for ethical engineering.
Second. Longevity as carbon dilution.
A car used for fifteen years spreads manufacturing emissions across more kilometres. Ladder frame SUVs and structurally rigid hatchbacks score better here. Toyota Innova, Mahindra Scorpio N, and Tata Nexon lead because owners keep them longer and resale remains strong.
Third. Operational efficiency at scale.
Lightweight platforms and CNG systems reduce daily emissions across millions of cars. Maruti Suzuki scores well here through fuel efficiency and factory fitted CNG, even when safety scores trail leaders.
Metrics used in ranking
Crash test rating.
Expected vehicle life in years.
Fuel or energy efficiency.
Availability of CNG or EV variants.
Manufacturing water and energy practices.
